Why Walking is the Most Underrated Form of Exercise
I didn’t realize how important it was to take a walk outside before the pandemic started. I would always be cooped up in my room, sitting at my desk for hours straight and never stepping foot outside. I’m sure we all have experienced Zoom fatigue – staring at the screen for hours and feeling more tired than ever.
At first, it was tough to get myself to go outside since I was so used to always sitting in my chair, but one day, I randomly asked myself, “why not?” and went for it. I put on my favorite athletic sneakers, grabbed my headphones, queued up my favorite songs in my playlist, and started walking. I walked through my neighborhood, and the best part was that I felt instant relief. The smell of fresh air and the feeling of moving my body gave me joy, and I could feel my mood improving. I felt more awake and energized which was something that I hadn’t felt in a long time.
According to Harvard Health, “a study of over 1,000 men and women found that those who walked at least 20 minutes a day, at least 5 days a week, had 43% fewer sick days than those who exercised once a week or less. And if they did get sick, it was for a shorter duration, and their symptoms were milder.” Additionally, according to Mayo Clinic, walking can also improve muscle endurance, prevent heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, and much more.
I believe that a little bit of exercise each day, even if it’s 15 minutes, is worth it. Getting your body to move was something that I didn’t understand until I randomly decided to take a walk. Plus, you can get your steps in! Walking has allowed me to step away from school and take a breather. It’s something that I look forward to every evening.
Besides walking in my neighborhood, and if time permits, I sometimes like to go into a more nature-filled environment and walk there. I have been to places that overlook a lake and even a city. Changing up your surroundings is essential, and it also makes it more enjoyable for you.
If you ever feel tired of Zoom university or just want to do something, take a walk. Maybe one walk can change your life!
